Chimney Inspection in Norwich

What forty years of oil does inside a flue

Oil-fired heating produces a sooty, acidic residue. It accumulates in the flue, and unlike wood creosote it does not announce itself with smell or smoke. What it does instead is attack the mortar joints between flue tiles and the tiles themselves, slowly, from the inside, in a part of the chimney nobody ever sees.

This is why a visual inspection from the roof is close to useless on an older Connecticut chimney. The crown might be perfect, the brick sound, the cap correctly fitted, and the flue liner failing along its whole length. A camera answers it in twenty minutes and nothing else does.

What the camera actually looks for

Cracked or missing flue tiles, mortar joints that have washed out between them, gaps where the liner has separated, and any sign that combustion products have been reaching the masonry behind. A gap in the liner matters because it lets flue gases into the chimney structure and, in the worst case, into the house.

Why this matters before a conversion

If you are switching from oil to gas, the state of the existing flue decides part of the job. A liner is going in either way because the flue will be oversized for the new appliance, but whether the surrounding masonry also needs work is something you want established before the quote, not after the boiler is out.

What a good report contains

You should receive something written, with photographs and camera stills, that states what was examined, what was found, and what it means. A verbal summary at the door is not a report, and it is not something you can show a buyer, a seller or an insurer.

Findings separated from recommendations

A good report distinguishes what is a safety defect from what is wear worth watching. Those are different categories and conflating them is how an inspection turns into a sales document. If everything found is urgent, ask why.

Photographs you can understand

Camera stills of the flue, exterior shots of the crown, cap and flashing, and a photograph of the appliance connection. You should be able to look at the report a year later and know what state the chimney was in.
