What Decides the Cost of a Chimney Liner in Connecticut

The five things that actually move it

None of these is negotiable padding. Each one is a real difference in material or labor, and knowing which applies to your chimney is how you read a quote.

Diameter

Set by the appliance manufacturer venting tables. A larger appliance needs a larger liner and larger liner costs more per foot. This is not adjustable.

Length

Straightforward — a three-story stack needs more liner than a ranch.

Insulation

A wrap or a poured insulation adds material and a good deal of labor. It is required where the chimney runs cold: exterior stacks, unheated walls, long runs. On an interior chimney in a heated house it may genuinely not be needed, and that is the single biggest legitimate difference between two quotes.

Offsets

A chimney that bends is harder to line. A modest offset is handled by flexible liner. A severe one may need the chimney opened at that point and rebuilt afterwards, which changes the job entirely.

Crown and top plate

The liner is secured at the crown. If the crown is cracked or crumbling it has to be made good first, and that is masonry work with its own cost.

Where quotes diverge and why

When two companies price the same chimney very differently, it is almost never one of them being greedy. It is usually one of them including something the other left out, or one of them having actually surveyed the flue.

Was there a camera survey?

A quote given without one is an estimate. Offsets, partial blockages of old tile, and the true condition of the masonry are only visible on camera, and all three change the price.

Stainless grade

Liner is sold in different grades. The heavier grades cost more and are rated for more aggressive flue gas — which matters on an oil appliance or where the flue has already taken decades of acidic condensate.

Warranty conditions

Good systems carry a lifetime warranty, almost always conditional on professional installation and annual sweeping. Ask what the condition is, because an unregistered or unmaintained liner is frequently an uncovered one.
